Tin can't register wuaueng.dll - Return code was 0x80070005

Question
In troubleshooting a WSUS issue with several of my clients non downloading and installing updates I unregistered wuaueng.dll on ane of them simply now I can no longer re-annals it. I now become an fault saying "DLLRegisterServer in wuaueng.dll failed. Return lawmaking was 0x80070005". I also get the this error when trying to annals qmgr.dll. I now no longer have the Automatic Updates service available in computer direction. I've testing registering other dlls and it works fine.

I've tried re-installing the Windows Update Agent and that fails with the same error code. That error is manifestly permissions related so I ran dial-a-fix to sort the security on the client but that didn't aid either.

The customer I'k working on is XP SP3 and the WSUS server is V3.two.

That behavior is highly unusual on an XP system. Have you performed appropriate malware scans on these systems (including looking for hidden root kits)?

Are you using the ADMINISTRATOR account?

Have you tried running the WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe utility with the /WUFORCE switch?

Not sure what caused the DLL to get screwed up but when running WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe i noticed it failed at the registry updates. I forced an update on registry to allow local admins total access to the HKLM then WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe installed fine and my AU services is back up and running.
